Surfers beneath Crystal Pier, Pacific Beach, San Diego, California, 2010

A group of surfers sit on their boards beneath the pillars of the old Crystal Pier at sunset, awaiting a wave that will sweep them towards the shore. I backlight both the surfers and the pillars. The silhouetted figures and the old posts dripping in seaweed combine to make a strongly abstract geometric image. The color in the foreground reflection repeats the color of the background sky.

Thanks for noting the role of abstraction here, Vera. This image does hold a lot back, creating that sense of mystery, anticipation, and peacefulness you note.

I spent a long time and many frames to get this particular composition, Alister. I wanted to fill each space between the pillars with a surfer, and it took a while for this moment to happen. This is a previsualized image -- I knew what I wanted, framed those graphic pillars against a golden sky, and waited for those spaces to simultaneously fill.
