Family, Durango, Colorado, 2010

The interaction of the members of this family, seated just outside Durango’s railroad depot and gift shop, is rich in human values. I assume that the couple in the middle of this image are the parents of the young child seen here reaching for the bill of her fathers cap. He leans towards the child, encouraging its explorations. The women on either side observe the scene with a sense of humor. The yellow balloon and the yellow shirt of the woman on the left lend a festive air to the scene, and link the family to the yellow wall of the depot just behind. In the window of that depot, a woman shops, unaware of the domestic tableau being played out just below her. The image provides a sense of family, offers a touch of humor, and represents pleasure. All of these are basic human values.

Thanks, Vera and Alina, for commenting on this image. Both the woman in the window and the reaction to the baby make this image express it's ideas. We have parallel universes simultaneously at work here.

Beautiful family portrait with the baby as a center of attention ;)

I tried to imagine what this image would look like without the windows in the background. For me, these window really make the photo. They add depth to the image and again mystery.

Thanks for reminding us, Tim, that human values are reflected all around us, in everything we see. Inside, outside, and also out of the frame itself. It is nice to know that such values exist, even if we can't see them all. Thank you.

I like the relationship between the scene you are shooting and the oblivious people inside. It is a reminder to me that "human values" are occurring all around us - we don't need to see them all, we can get on with making our coffee - but it is nice to remember that they are happening.

Idyllic, indeed. The yellow balloon, shirt, and building drew me to the scene in the first place, Rose.

Such an idyllic scene; I like the yellows too.
