The reader, Vancouver, Canada, 2009

It was the light that kindled my interest in this image. A photo of just someone reading a book is not an expressive photograph. However bathe the scene in dappled light that throws delightful shadows on a background wall, and bring the face of the reader out of darkness so that only the head and hand are visible, and the image acquires all the qualities of expression. It is abstract, incongruous, and speaks of such human values as knowledge and relaxation.

Thank you for this comment, Rob. His abstracted gaze is the story here. We are left to imagine his thoughts.

He's looking away from himself, straight into the story/abstraction, like a physician thinking about subatomic particles.

I see all of that here as well -- as readers, we seek both pleasure and enlightenment, but sometimes we must simply stop and think about what we have learned or felt. This is just such a moment.

As a more than avid reader - I see this as a metaphor for reading - it seems to me as if the man is currently looking away from the book - the shadow on the wall seems to me to represent the thoughts multiplying in his head as a result of reading. The light on his face and his hand seems to speak of the enlightenment of literature.

Thanks, Rose and Iris for noting the way the head floats in space, underscoring his absorption in the book.

The essence of reading.....the hand holding the book and the head absorbing the book!

Wow, from the thumbnail, the head seems to be floating in space.
