Annisquam Light, Gloucester, Massachusetts, 2009

The forty foot high Annisquam Light was built at the mouth of the Annisquam River in 1897, and is still active, although now it is fully automated. I made this image of it just after sunset from the deck of a tour boat. I built the image around the pink diagonal cloud leading from the upper left hand corner of the frame to the lighthouse. The cloud suggests a symbolic beam of light, coming at the moment when day meets night.

Thank you, Iris, for seeing the magic in this image. What you see here is an exactly what I saw in real time. The whole world seemed to turn pink at this moment. I spot metered on the top of the lighthouse, which also gave me a point to focus on.

The wonderful glow of light after the sun sets is just magical, a welcoming image to sailors and tour boat occupants. In an image like this, Phil, where did you point your spot meter to get such wonderful light, such soft color in the sky, and such a beautiful reflection on the sea? They all work together so perfectly creating quite an amazing image.

Thanks, Tim -- I had hoped that the line of orange clouds leading into the light house would do just that -- symbolize the function of the lighthouse itself.

It was the diagonal that drew me to this image, Rose. The diagonal sweep of illuminated cloud acts as metaphorical beam of light soaring over a lighthouse.
