Checking out, Port Angeles, Washington, 2009

We’ve all been there – overwhelmed by our stuff. I caught photographer and friend Tim May deftly nudging his Baggalini (an amazing carry-on bag) into action while maneuvering at least six other bags, parcels, cases and a camera into position at check out time. Such is the lot of all those who dare to shop as they travel.

Thanks, Tim, for coming to this image and trying to see it objectively, even if it proves impossible to do so. I did not notice that your jacket was half on and half off at this moment until just now. That enriches the moment greatly -- it says you were in a hurry to get going, and adds a layer of haste to the image. It also humanizes you, and symbolically reminds all of us that we, too, have often struggled to manage things when we are in a hurry.

I don't recall being at all please - and was very, very far from Tai-Chi here. I think my favorite part of the image, if I look objectively, which is hard to do, is the fact that I am only half wearing my jacket.

Thanks, Rose, and Carol, for your empathetic comments I am sure Tim will be glad to know that he is doing a Tai-Chi move, and that he should try packing in a larger bag. As I responded to Anuschka below, when Tim travels in his own truck, he feels free to spread stuff out a bit, and while it might cause him some stressful moments such as this one, he really has no need to consolidate or skimp as if he was flying somewhere.

Fun image! I can just see Tim now deftly wheeling his wheeled belongings toward his car, and the look on his face suggests it takes a lot of concentration to maneuver all that stuff. One idea to avoid a large number of carry items?? One BIGGER bag. But as we all know when packing, if you have your own transportation to carry it all in, no problem with how to carry multiple items. I know I do this myself, and frequently must make multiple trips to the car!

LOL, that's a classic expressive moment from Tim's personality. He looks like he's doing a Tai-Chi movement. And I recognize the red tote bag, we got them as freebies at the MacWorld Expo in January 2009; it's a sturdy bag with comfortable straps. IMHO I would crop out the wall on the right side of the frame.

Thanks, Anuschka, for seeing the humor in such an incongruous moment as this. I agree -- I try to travel light, and seldom buy anything larger than a new cap for my collection when I am on the road. But Tim has an excuse here -- he had his own truck with him, so he could buy as much stuff as he wanted. Apparently, his only problem was trying to get it all out the door at one time.
