Passing time, Port Angeles-Victoria Ferry, 2009

Tourists spend a lot of time in transit from one place to another. Such is the case here, on the hour and a half ferry ride between the US and Canada. I found a woman listening to her iPod with great concentration, shutting everything else in the world out except her music. Meanwhile, the folks just behind her have even shut themselves out – they appear to be sound asleep. I put them in soft focus, to intensify their dreamy state.

You are right, Jen -- there is the same sense of simultaneous disconnects here that I found in your image linked below. There are three different worlds at work here. My own world is devoted to making this image to share with others as a teaching tool. The world of the woman in the foreground is based on electronic satisfactions. And the couple in the background share a world of dreams together. I shot this scene from a number of perspectives, and liked the frame within the frame idea here the best. Glad you found the image as amusing as I did.

This image reminds me of one of my pictures-http://www.pbase.com/angeleyes_zyl/image/75031335
They share a same space but so engaged in their own world, not aware of each other. And you, as the third person, cleverly captured this humorous moment. And your framing is even more clever, because on my first gaze I wasn't sure if I was looking at that sleeping couple in a mirror or through a window!

I have no figures on how many of these ferry riders are locals and how many are traveling tourists, Carol. But these passengers are very savvy -- the few seats with tables go very quickly. This woman must have been an early boarder, just like the nappers at the next table. As for the humor in it, I can empathize with the snoozers here. I often fall to sleep on flights, and probably look just as amusing to those who are awake.

Ferry rides must be second nature to locals as seen here by the non-actions of these passengers. I especially love the couple snoozing, gaping wide open mouth seems comical to see somehow. Nice capture! Hope you didn't wake them!!
