Exercise, Tozeur, Tunisia, 2008

The sight of a child flinging his body out over a street is an incongruous one. I saw him exercising from a distance, and as I approached, I kept shooting bursts of multiple images. This was by far the most expansive, catching him in mid flight. The other people in the picture don’t even see him exercising -- such gyrations over a front door are taken for granted in the neighborhoods of Tozeur. The houses, painted in soft pastels, add character and context.

The street is where so much of life takes place in Tunisia. I did not see any isolated playgrounds, as in the west. You are right -- the kids will make the most of whatever they may have at hand.

You are right -- my burst shooting definitely showed the comparative effect of this peak action. Most of the shots I made just before and just after this one did not have the same vitality -- although there was another fine moment when he finally disengaged and landed on the ground with great flair.
