Innocence, Douze, Tunisia, 2008

The weekly sheep market at Douze, at the gates of the Sahara Desert, offers visions of innocence. In this grouping, I found a lamb and a ewe seeking shelter under the horn of a ram. The body of another sheep lends its support to all. The image becomes even more poignant when we realize that these animals have no idea of the fate that soon awaits them. Our visit to the sheep market, like so many other places on our tour of Tunisia, coincided with the worst light of the day. To avoid harsh, ugly contrasts, I looked for subjects in the shade, such as this grouping.

i tried to give these animals, raised to be sold for food, a human dimension, and in doing so, call attention to the sad facts surrounding the image. Thanks, Claudia, for noting the innocence and poignancy expressed here.

Yes, innocence and indeed very poignant.
I find they have given up fighting and i am not sure they don't know what is awaiting for them... It is as if they are hoping, all together, for something that will change their beyond sad destiny... As i see this, i realized that their short lives is now long gone...

The lamb on the left is giving us a look that we get from many a person we make images of.

Thanks for appreciating the value of shooting in the shade at noon, Carol.

Innocence indeed! The three little lambs posing together. Lousy light or no, this is a fine shot.
