Dusk, Mount Hood, Oregon, 2008

The lingering light of a sun that has already colored the glacier-streaked face of Oregon’s highest mountain as it rises above the timberline. Mount Hood is considered the Oregon volcano most likely to erupt, and this reddish image offers an inkling of its latent threat. The 11,200 foot high mountain is visible up to a hundred miles away. I made this image from a pullout less than 15 miles away.

Thanks for commenting on the role of tension in this image. The trees do indeed trace the upward path of the ever increasing pressures taking place within this volcano. This intrusive layer of sharply defined points symbolize the energy within, and the reddish glow on the peak itself implies the fire and devastation of the eruption to come.

There is a great calmness in Mt Hood in the background, yet the sharp intrusion of the jarring black silhouettes in the foreground warn of a violent past and an impending danger in the future. A wonderful play of tension here!

Thanks, Patricia, for noting the role of the silhouetted trees here -- the layer of pines give scale to the mountain and the triangular shapes echo the triangular shape of the mountain.

What an exceptional image, Phil. The stark shapes of evergreen branches silhouetted against the mountain painted in watercolor-like hues gives such a sense of wonder. How I love these golden times of day.

Thanks, Alina, for your comment. And thanks, Tim, for seeing the implied threat that I see here. It is jarring to think of this mountain as anything other than beautiful. Yet it is a volcano, a slumbering giant capable of tremendous destruction, as Mt. Helens demonstrated not too long ago. The reddish glow here implies the fire within.

Majestic threat. I remember Mt. Saint Helens - which erupted several years ago. These giants hold tremendous power and yet they are so beautiful.
