Les Vicissitudes (Acrylic paint on paper and canvas)
This is one of a series of collages made from discarded works that accumulated on the floor of Dubuffet's studio. Seeing their potential to form new compositions, he cut and assembled them into nearly one hundred large-scale collages. Peopled by his characteristic figures, Dubuffet called the series as a whole 'theatres of memory'. This evocation of his recent past snatched from earlier compositions may echo Frances Yates's contemporary study of classical mysticism, The Art of Memory (1966).
