I now know this is a yellow crowned night heron, thanks to Cindi below with the comment with the info. It lives in a rentention pond (image for 8/22 for a view of the pond) behind a busy business in north Austin with lots of truck traffic. It was pretty easy to get close enough to it.

A yellow crowned night heron. I've gotten a lot of shots of these. They will eat anything! Great find and I like the composition. He seems pretty calm with you taking his picture!
