Sunset Lake was named many moons ago Places Pond and a lady I believe her name was Mrs. Perkins was instrumental in getting it changed to Sunset Lake. I tried to copy a document that I have saying that Sunset Lake is 364 acres, but the scanner will not give a clear copy of it. I guess there is all kinds of different documents around that say all different things and one really doesn't know which one to believe.
This is a great picture and shows a lot of the area.
A shot taken yesterday of 3 small lakes from Avery Hill in Alton. Hills Pond is 3 mi. due west from Sandy Point. Crystal Lake appears in the photo to be considerably smaller than either of the other 2 lakes, but it is in fact the largest of the 3 - distance and perspective belie that fact in the photo. Crystal Lake is about 440 acres, Sunset Lake is about 250 acres and Hills Pond is about 140 acres. The name Hills Pond goes back to the earliest days of settlement of this area, in the 1700's. All 3 ponds were originally (there were probably Indian names earlier) named for early settlers of the area - only Hills Pond retains its early name. The right side of the photo shows the western half of the Belknap Range.
