Norfolk Town Hall - Postmark 1914

Ten minutes of Two. Norfolk was previously a part of Wrentham. It is a rural suburban town on the periphery of metropolitan Boston, located on an upper valley of the Charles River. There were a half dozen small farms in the town after 1669, the result of a determined effort to populate the colonial frontier. This was seen as a difficult task despite the good agricultural lands, fresh water fishing and fish runs because the settlement was so remote.

It was abandoned during the King Philip's war, and when Norfolk was re-established settlers relied on agriculture and cattle grazing with some considerable lumbering and planting of orchards. After 1812, three cotton manufacturing companies were established at Stony Brook, and later in the 19th century George Campbell's paper mill was opened at Highland Lake making heavy wrapping and building papers. The town saw a rapid increase in population after 1925 when a hospital and a state prison were built in Norfolk on the Walpole line. Major residential development took place before 1940 in the Pondville and Clark Streets section of town with scattered new housing along Seekonk and Main Streets, and suburban residential building has continued since.

Norfolk became a separate town (with a railroad station) in 1870 and Plainville also, in 1906. The end of this century brought the railroad to Wrentham Center, which transformed life here forever.

Mann's Store Was Located Across From The Town Hall And Town Hill On Main Street. The Store Later Became Norfolk's St. Mary's Church Then The Church Built A New Building & Moved Further Down Main Street To It's Present Location And The Older St. Mary's Church Building Was Taken Down And Offices And A Bank Have Been Built There.

I Have To Reconsider My First Description Of The Other 2 Buildings That Are Not The Town Hall,Regarding The Angle Of This Picture. It Looks As Though The White Building To The Left Of The Town Hall Is The Federated Church Across The Street From The Town Hill& Hall,Before They Added Onto The Main Building Of The Church& The Building To The Right Of The Church Was The Old School That I Attended, Not The Town Hall That Appears To Be located On The Town Hill. The Other Comments About The CityMills School Are Accurate. My Apologies,Ashley Bigelow
