Have you attempted to use AA alkaline batteries in the Dynax 7D grip? The voltage difference is significant between NiMh and Alkaline cells. NiMh: 6x1.2 = 7.2 V while alkaline: 6x1.5 = 9.0 V. If one (any one) alkaline cell is replaced by a conductive cylinder, the remaining 5 cells should give 5x1.5=7.5 V, approximately 4% higher voltage than expected. Do you think this would be tolerated by the camera? Alternatively, a correctly rated schottky or germanium diode in the dummy element could provide the necessary voltage drop (0.4V or 0.3V respectively). Alkaline cells could thus provide emergency power in the field when away from power grids and chargers. However, given the power consumption of digital cameras, using alkaline cells is both financially and environmentally unwise and should thus be used only when there is no alternative. Your opinion?
