Tulum pictures

Tulum (the Walled City) is the only Maya city constructed along a coast line. The reason the Maya chose this site was for the high cliffs which bordered it on one side offering excellent protection from invading enemies. The site was also used to guide the Maya on their canoe journeys to and from the island of Cozumel.

This was our first visit to Tulum and, although not as impressive nor as old as Chichen Itza, it offers great insight into the Maya civilization. And it is a short 30-minute drive south of Playa del Carmen making it easily accessible by car, bus or collectivo.
