Located 13 km north of central Kuala Lumpur, Batu Caves is a limestone hill with a series of caves. In 1890, Indian trader Pillai installed a statue of Sri Subramania Swamy inside the cave. It is now a sacred Hindu site. To reach the entrance to the main Cathedral Cave, visitors have to climb 272 steep steps.
In 2006, a 43m tall concrete and steel statue of Lord Muruga was installed next to the entrance steps. Actually, Batu Caves is NOT located within the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, but in the district of Gombak, state of Selangor. Just beneath the cave are lots of small Indian shops, catering to tourists and worshipers. We visited a shop that serves teh tarik (pulled tea 拉茶). |
