Tokyo (東京), the capital and the largest city of Japan. Together with New York & London, it is one of the world three financial centers.

Formerly called Edo (江戸), it was the site of the Tokugawa Shogunate (徳川幕府) military government from 1603 until the Meiji Restoration (明治維新). When the Emperor moved from Kyoto to here in 1868, it became Japan’s new capital and was renamed Tokyo.
