A mosaic by Charles Lameire (1832-1910) inside the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière depicts the decisive naval battle on Oct 1571 between the Holy League and the Ottoman Empire, when the West stopped Muslim incursion into Europe. Pope St. Pius V (shown praying) was credited with forming an alliance between Spain, Venice, Naples, Genoa and Sicily into the Holy League.
