Church of the Holy Savior in Chora is now a museum known as Kariye Müzesi.
"Chora" means "in the field" because this site stood outside of the original Constantine wall. The wall built by Theodosius II in 413-414 incorporated it into the city limit. |
This is its esonarthex, the inner entrance lobby, where most of the mosaics are.
Most of the mosaics here depict the life of Virgin Mary, except the followings. At the bottom is Apostle Peter. To the right is a Deësis showing Jesus with Mary. In between these is a door, above which is a mosaic of enthroned Christ with Theodore Metochites presenting a model of this church. Metochites was a 14th century Byzantine statesman who endowed the church with its finest mosaics. |
