Cosimo I, the first Grand Duke of Tuscany, ordered the Latin text "Rex regum et Dominus dominantium" be placed over the entrance to the Palazzo Vecchio in 1551.
By proclaiming allegiance to no king but Christ, Florence declared their independence as a city state and rejected the notion of belonging to any earthly kingdom.
