Consecrated in 1442, the Basilica of Santa Croce (Holy Cross) is the largest Franciscan church in the world. It is most notable as burial sites for famous Italians. Inside are the tombs of Michelangelo, Galileo, Machiavelli, etc. There are also memorials for 20th century scientists Marconi and Fermi.
On the lower left is a statue of native son Dante, who was exiled from Florence and took refuge in Verona.
