Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II as viewed from Piazza Venezia
This monument to the first king of a unified Italy was designed by Giuseppe Sacconi in 1885, and completed in 1935.
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with an eternal flame is under the statue and guarded by 2 solders.
This year marked the 150th anniversary of Victor Emmanuel II becoming king of Italy.
For a country that has never won a war without powerful allies, Italy has a lot of war monuments claiming victories.
