The Battle of Tennoji 天王寺の戦 on June 3, 1615 was the last hopeless battle fought by the defenders of Osaka Castle. This miniature battlefield shows Sanada Yukimura 真田幸村 leading his outnumbered men in a charge against the 150,000 strong force of Tokugawa. Sanada and all his men perished.
In Japanese history, Sanada is portrayed as a tragic hero, similar to Kusunoki Masashige 楠木 正成, with steadfast loyalty to his master, who seldom heeded their military advices.
