Canon EF 17-40mm f4 L USM
Before there was any EF-s lens for crop camera, I used this ultra-wide angle (UWA) lens as a standard zoom. It served my purpose well until I switched to the EF-s 17-55 f2.8IS, which has better resolution, stabilized optics and wider aperture. However, comparing the 17-40L to the 17-55 is unfair, because its greatest asset is not utilized on crop cameras. Since I upgraded to the Canon 5D Mk III, my 17-40L is back in action as a UWA, the way Canon had intended. On full frame bodies, the weakest part of this lens is lack of corner sharpness. At its widest, even stopped down to f8, it is still not as sharp as the Canon 10-22 at f3.5. Chromatic aberration (CA) and 3rd 3rd order "mustache" barrel distortion of this lens are quite noticeable on full frame. Fortunately, both are easily correctable in post processing. I used Adobe Lightroom on all the photos in this gallery. |
