Uudenmaan virkistysalueyhdistys ry. is a trust owned by municipalities in the Uusimaa region. The trust purchases or rents land for outdoor recreation.

Varlaxudden is one of the 36 (January 2012) such areas.

I have now (January 2023) visited the place 15 times over 17 years. The struggling lonely pine has become my main focus: it lives -but hardly grows- on a barren rock maybe five meters to the sea. It is exposed to easterly to southerly winds, has little access to fresh water and is washed occasional salt water sprays from the sea.
