11-12-29 - Ice Boating on Ghost Lake and Amazing Ice Formations
Great day for ice boating on the Ghost Lake Reservoir with my friend, Peter. Warm (for December), sunny, windy and not too many snow drifts and ice chunks to steer around. This was my first time piloting an ice boat, although I have sailed since I was a kid. Truly amazing speeds and almost instant acceleration, especially where the ice was super smooth. Probably sailed a bit slower than the 200 kph ice boat record speeds.
Also, it was a real treat to look deep into the 30cm+ thick ice which was clear as crystal. Where the ice fractured under stress, the intersecting cracks and air bubbles created amazing formations. That, along with the setting sun that changed colours in the prism like effects of the ice crystals created a micro winter wonderland. Enjoy.
