Looking down into the sulfurous crater at Masaya. There are actually two craters side by side here; the other one is quite shallow, filled in over time. The shallow one is fracturing and breaking off into the deep one. At the Masaya site there is a good little museum with very informative displays about the science of volcanoes, as well as the flora and fauna to be found there. Sightings of mammals are rare, since the local population somewhat understandably views them as dietary protein.
