On November 14, Mike Pollack discovered and photographed two Red-headed Woodpeckers at Chinquapin Park. He found them gathering acorns from a black or red oak and caching many of them in an adjacent mostly dead maple. The next day, I was able to find the trees and one of the woodpeckers which I photographed using my Canon 40D and 100-400 mm lens and digiscoped using a Nikon 4300 point-and-shoot camera attached to a Kowa TSN 823 spotting scope.

On November 16, one of the major maple tree limbs with many cached acorns and cavities still under construction crashed to the ground while I was watching. As of November 17, one bird, undeterred by the minor setback, continued to feed on acorns and insect larva and diligently store acorns for the winter in other snags in the maple. The bird is very aggressively protecting its territory and has chased off a White-breasted Nuthatch, a Blue Jay, Tufted Titmice, Carolina Chickadees, and a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker.
