Dear Paul,
Wow! You could and should be earning a fortune from your photos; -Please tell me you are?! In 18 years of modelling you're the only photographer I've ever known who composes, fills frames and draws the eye exactly as I would want, but even if I took photos in the same locations with the same camera I couldn't get shots like yours without your technical skills. you're fantastic and a true Artist;- Well done! I wish you weren't so far away otherwise I'd LOVE to have Model Testshots done by you cos you'd be the only person to be able to understand and give me exactly what I really want. I've tried so hard explaining in the past to photographers, but their interpretation is so far removed from mine. I know with you I could trust you completely to pose me and structure shots exactly as you like and they'd be perfect! Let me know when you're around or near the Midlands so we can meet up! Keep up the Fantastic work, I love to see you using your real talents.
Love Always,
Resi Xx

Hi Paul,
I'm so pleased that I discovered your galleries. It is now listed under my favorites. You are a superb photographer, and an inspiration to me. You are a master of lighting. The muted lighting effects on your animal shots, such as your apes, is very effective. I am curious as to how you achieve this. I am also fascinated by your use of a flood filter, as I am not familiar with it.
I have left a number of comments and votes in your animal gallery. After seeing your work, I am ready to scrap mine, and start over. Thank you for the wonderful visual experiences and inspiration to other photographers that you have provided on pbase.

Fantastic indeed. You are a true master of composition, balance and mood. However, I wonder if some of your images would not be even better if they were less saturated, since intense saturation has a tendency to subtract from tonality.

Hi Paul,

Merry Christmas to you, too. And thanks for the quick response. Perhaps you could help use the levels and curves like you do. Take your boat photo 65DT4744 for instance... I would have expected all of the white values to be very similar in all of the boats, but the values seem to change as the eye moves away from the central boat (similar to a burn around the edge). How was this done? Thanks again for getting back to me so soon.

Thank you,
Paul Keates24-Dec-2003 10:02
Hello Mark,
Happy Christmas to you.
Thank you of your comment.
I do not use dodging or burning.
Generally, I just adjust the curves and contrast.
Best Regards,
Guest 24-Dec-2003 04:06
Hi Paul,

I love your work. How do you dodge and burn your photos? Is it an action in PS or the D&B tool? It is so subtle and even I am very interested as to how you achieve it.

Hello Paul,
I wish to thank you for the very kind comment you left in my gallery.

Allow me to return the compliment and seize this opportunity to let you know how much I admire your photography (although I do not often leave comments because of my akward use of Shakespeare language). I enjoy paying frequent visits to your galleries, where I always find images that are a powerful source of inspiration.

My best wishes to you and your family for this coming year.

Hello Bob,
I am sorry I do not know much about the Nikon Coolpix 4500.
On my Canon 10D I use a FF 100mm Macro Lens.
The depth of field on this lens is very shallow compared to most lenses.
With the 10D I switch to a single focus point, rather the multiply point focusing.
I always manually focus.
Hope this helps, good luck.
Guest 06-Dec-2003 03:44
Dear Paul,
Your flower pictures are great. In another forum it was suggested that a nikon coolpix 4500 could blur the background of a flower picture. The examples given in that forum to show bluring or vague background, did not show a blurred or vague background with a low fstop of about f3.5 or f3. The distracting background was still present, as leaves or twigs, definitely identifiable. With all do respect to the person trying to show this, the background was still visible as a distraction. Since you seem to actually do what I am asking about, I wondered if it is that you use a canonD1, although Jim stated that" the nikon coolpix 4500 is as good a macro at any price." And I'm only trying to understand and very highly respect Jim. As far as you know can the 4500 do flower pictures as yours, or is it the photoshop manipulation? Or What? Trying to understand and have been (as a digital novice) learned a lot from Jim, but his response is different that the results show. Thank you Bob Essak

Some very nice work Paul. I'll have to stop by "after hours" to get a look at the rest but what I saw was quite impressive. Regards, - Dan

No, I only use Digital, no film camera's
I know of the Kodak DCS-14n, but have no experience with one.
Good luck with your modeling photo's.

Hi Paul!
I'm just curious: What is your camera model? Do you use a lot of accesories (lens, filters...) and do you use any software like Photoshop©.
I have a Sony F717 and i would like to do headshots and modeling photos with my photogenic friends (and cute girlfriend) but i don't know how to process with the lightning. For the moment i do some macros.
Do you work with non-Digicam like Mamiya? Do you know the Kodak DCS-14n? I'd love to upgrade my recent Sony to a Canon (D60 or 10D).
Bye Paul! Best wishes from France where we're waiting for your great eye-cam!!
