The Island and People of Saipan

Hafa Adai!!! I lived and worked on the island of Saipan from 2002 through 2005. Saipan is one of 14 islands in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) located in the Western Pacific Ocean. Saipan lies about 1,200 miles south of Tokyo, Japan and 1,500 miles east of Manila, Philippines. The CNMI is part of the United States. The population of Saipan is composed of Chamoros, Carolinians, Palauans, Chukese, Philippinos, Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, Thais, Bangladeshes, USA mainlanders, and others. Chamoros and Carolinians (indigenous population) are US citizens. I have included a few photos from the island of Rota. Rota is a neighbor island to Saipan and part of the CNMI.

Lived on Saipan, 1957-60, as a Seabee, built the Boonie Bowl, bowling alley, ran the maintenance for the Navy, we were a cover for the CIA, who were training Formosan Troops to invade Mao. My daughter was born there in 1958

Absolutely loved seeing these beautiful pictures of Saipan. There are tears in my eyes as I type this. I live on the island in the early 1950's as my father had a job with the Trust Territory. He was a doctor that help set up a TB facility at the "quonset hut" hospital. I was there with my mother and sister and remember it most fondly. What an idyllic childhood I had - no school - just Calvert Course correspondence school from Baltimore. We went swimming and bike riding every day, went into the pillboxes on the beach and jumped from pontoons and tanks in the crystal clear water. My father Dr. Leo Rettinger knew Dr. Torres and his wife and family. I particularly remember my Mom and I learning how to make shell handbags and to this day I still have them - just like new. Mrs. Torres always had Coca-Cola for us and that was such a treat. Her daughter Chong played the piano and I still have a piece of sheet music with her name on it. I have tons of memories of the round club house and playing bingo.

I visited siapan in 1953 my father was navy & on the uss Indy my three brothers & I had to stay about one year my mother found my father with another women she had two sons in fact she was the queen of the Island due to her father was the high sheriff her madden name was Sophia Aldan my father Cecil e Fields brought her & her children to the states they had 5 total my mother had 4 boys by Cecil & another by un known all 10 of us brothers grew up together its very cool to 9 when 5 of them are from Siapan if you have any info on Siapan in 53 & 54 please email me.?..

My father was on Saipan during WWII as a SeeBee building air strips etc. He very often spoke of the island and I wish I could have shown him these photos, that makes me so very sad indeed. The island seems so rich in beauty from these photos; I so would like to visit there.

I was 6 years old and lived in saipan due to my father was in the Navy and stationed ther from 1947 1950 i believe and have a sister who was born ther 06/29/1949. Iamtrying to get pictures for her to see where she was born and what saipan looked like then. also want to send my mom's ashes there to be spread around the navy housing from that time and from the hills. I lived on Saipan from 1977 to 1978. I worked for the Attorney General of the TTPI at the time, Dan High. Met my second husband there and followed him to the states. Although your pictures show much has changed, much has remained the same. I have enjoyed looking at your beautiful photos. They brought back so many wonderful memories. Thank you for sharing the photos. I left many friends on Saipan along with a piece of my heart.

My father Charles E. Miller was stationed in Saipan in 1954-56. Although i was very young, I remember every day I spent on the island. The war had only been over a few years and there were still Japanese soldiers hiding out in some of the caves on Saipan and other neighboring islands. My sisters and I used to play in the wreckage of the landing crafts and Japanese zeros which still littered the beaches and boondocks. My father passed a few years ago but my mother is still with us (at 93) and when I visit her she always wants me to show her all the old photos of Saipan and sing "Upon the Hill" for her. We both weep with joy for having been in such a beautiful , even if for only a brief time, long long ago. I will share these amazing photos to her next time I see her. Thank you!

I lost contact with my cousin Antonio Gumabay and his son Efren Gumabay who went to Saipan years ago, Kuya Tony worked with the Hiponia Construction before but I am not sure of their whereabouts now. Is there anyway or anybody who can give me info how to inquire and find out about their whereabouts? Would appreciate any help ...

Thank`s for those pics, they are as beautyful as all my memories during my Time on Saipan back in the 8os! Left some cherished friends there like June Riley (already passed away) and Don Bufton owners of the Saipan Lady/Ship Ashore Restaurant and if some of you still remember it and had Dinner there once, it may well be that I was the one Broiling your Steak and Lobster since June and Don was not only my Friends but also my Employers! Also had some good Times at Round Twos with Don and Nola. Anyway...maybe one of these Days I shall be back,peter

It's been a few years since I've been home on Saipan. Although I am only a little hundred miles away (living on Guam), I get homesick and long to go home. There is no place like Saipan. The people and the surroundings make it very special. The pictures in this gallery are so special, and looking at them is the next best thing to being home. Thank you, Mr. Hodges, for sharing them.

I visited 8 times from '99 to '07 to visit son who worked there for Continental Air and his family. Photographer here did outstanding job. Standord and Riviera Hotel stays were inexpensive v. pdrices here in NYS. Snorkled Bird and Forbidden Island areas and Wing Beach among other sites. Botanical Garden is worth every penny of admission fee. American War Memorial and memorials at Bonzai cliffs are very sobering. Always think of Saipan when the winter snows and freezing weather hit New York.

I lived in Saipan atJoeTen's home in 1962. Went to Our Lady of Mout Carmel school. My father was CIA, undercover. I was put there during Bay Of Pigs activities. Don't plan to ever go back. Joe Ten's store was under the house, dirt road, weekly movie under the stars. Would love to see pictures of that time. I have none.

Spent 3 incredible years on beautiful Saipan as a pre-teen back in 1957-1960. My dad worked on the govt. base. I remember school in a quonset hut on a hill overlooking the blue Pacific, wildfires with exploding munitions, picking fruit in the jungles, exploring the beaches, and being a bridesmaid at a Chamorro wedding. I cried when we left this paradise. Saipan is always in my heart.

hello....how i miss the beauty of saipan...i work in saipan for almost a year as a secretary in saipan chamber of commerce way back 1993..during the time of roy morioka as the president of the chamber..he is a nice boss simple and humble....i got a lot of memories in saipan,having lots of new friends....i got a lot of experiences specially in the fields of my work....tnx to my office mate ladyvir who is still here in saipan until now....how i wish someday i could visit saipan again....

Your photos are beautitful, and I echo what everyone has been saying...they make me homesick! I'm Geri Rodgers, but I'm from the Tudela family (my mom was Berang Tudela Asuncion). I grew up in Saipan off and on. I attended Garapan Elem, Saipan Comm School, and Grace Christian Academy. My husband and I lived in Saipan 1995-2000 and both worked at GCA. We are planning to go back in a couple of years with our 4 children! Does anyone remember Auntie Mako's store in Chalan Kanoa? It used to be across from my nana's house? Just visited CNMI and Guam October 2009 with my son and his wife (caucasian) and we all loved what the islands had to offer; beauty, peace, hospitality, and harmony, etc. We were there for three weeks but it was not enough to cover the areas displayed in your gallery. It brought tears as I browsed through these photos. I'm proud to be a Rotaness!! I'm hoping within six years I will reyurn home for good, my resting place. The ancient CHAMORROS believed that fighting was never the answer to a problem, but if a fight for land does come about they fight till other one is injured. The winner then nurses the injured to health. They are more family friendly, also very hospitable and a loving culture. No matter where you’re from the CHAMORROS make you their family. For as long as I can remember the CHAMORROS are peaceful people. I lived in SAIPAN from when I was 2 till the time I was 17. I am a proud CHAMORRO & CAROLINIAN. I speak the language. And as a local of SAIPAN, I do believe that SAIPAN is the most beautiful and magnificent island in the CNMI.

These photos have really touched me. I lived on Capital Hill from'75 - 78 when i was ten years old. Explored the jungle every day. Swam on the Saipan Swim Club and my coach was Jeane Sakovich. Always wanted to go back. First kiss was Virginia Temmingeal (not sure of spelling) - island girl. Of course had to get but kicked now and then being an "Americano". We lived in the islands of Micronesia from 1970 through 1989. Visited Siapan frequently. The carnage that happened there during the war remains like ghost hanging over the island like so many of the islands where war happened. Away from the district center, covered by jungle growth the remains of the war testify to man's madness.

Hi Dave, My wife and I really enjoyed your gallery of photo of Saipan and some of the rest of the CNMI. I entered your web site after receiving an email from an old friend still living on Saipan. We got married on December 18, 1976 when Saipan was part of teh old Trust Territory of the Pacific, a vestige of WWII. Our ceremony took place on Micro Beach near what used to be the Continental Hotel, then owned by Continental Airlines. We lived on Guam and decided to get married on Saipan inviting all to the wedding who would buy a round trip ticket, plus our friends on Saipan. During that time frame you could buy a "Jack Pot Junket" ticket for US$100 which included a rol of quarters to use in the then legal slots. We moved back to the States in 1993 after twenty some years of living in geo Micronesia, Japan and, finally in the Phlippines. All the best to you, Tom Foster

i have come to know that on 28 nov., 2009 the nothern mariana island shall be totally a US territory region and THE PRESIDENT MR. BARRAK OBAMA has committed to the senate that this shall be the last date to consider this CNMI to join USA. if this is true can a visitor visa holder from INDIA be ..... if at the above date have a legal visa for 30 days and can travel to the mainland in USA.....FROM 28 NOV TO 27 DEC... 2009 ON THE VISTOR VISA OF CNMI......which has been granted before 28 nov 2009.. if one person wants to invest at present in SAIPAN a residential house and a small shop or an office ......what is the procedure and what shall be the minimum investment criteria by the CNMI authorities and shall this be taxed under USA LAWS...if this be under US laws then does this individual have a resident visa and can easily access to the mainland USA.DOES this investor if taxed under US laws can ever be countrd as citizen..........suggest something more and in detailed concept to invest and stay for lifetime in and on CNMI OR IN US MAINLAND.THANKS

Saipan was never like these photos when I worked there after World War 2 (1947-1949). I was with the American Graves Registration Services and we were not allowed to fraternize with the locals, so on our days off, we did a lot of basking on the beaches and swimming in the prestine sea.

I've been in Saipan once and my experience there was truly fantastic. It's such a peaceful place to be in... the people are very accommodating, they always have a ready smile on their faces. i've been to saipan last year.to visit my husband who is a OFW there.and seeing saipan in pictures once again gives back many memories.and staring on all of the pictures makes my heart beating fast...i wish i can go back again on this wonderful island....also because my better half is still there,imissu...HAFA ADAI

I've been away from home( 5 months now) and seeing these pictures just got me so feeling homesick. I missed the island so much especially my mom, Chibi. I'm here in the big island of Hawaii. I do love it here! I'm enjoying the great people that I've met and being a caregive to the elderlies (enjoy caring them). I've met and have made friends with very wonderful people here. They have been great! I consider them to be my adopted family. To my families back home, in Saipan, Hafa Adai! And to a very special friend, see you soon and always take care! Chamochuuk!

I just emailed friends in the mainland your website. I tried to download to send but couldn't. I am on Rota. I lived here for 9 years then moved back to the mainland for 5. I wanted to bring my daughter back here to know her culture- she was adopted from FSM but grew up on Rota. I think my friends will enjoy your pictures and maybe understand a little more of our life here. I am not Chamorro- but I already have a Chamorro heart.
