2007.09.02 ridgeline

Kerlingarfjöll, Iceland

We walked that ridgeline, and I can report that the surface is loose and there's a very steep drop on both sides. Coming down from the right is pretty scary. But there was not much wind that day, so it was really just a question of being careful. And being absolutely sure not to slip, of course.

** update ** In the interest of accuracy ... having looked at Terry's shot's I concluded that the ridgeline shown here is not the one we walked on, but another one nearby.

I haven't been to Uluru. And I guess since (last I heard) the local people were asking that we respect their religious associations with the rock and not climb it, I think it's unlikely I'll be risking myself there. But I had to walk this ridge, and sometime soon I'll post some shots of the area it leads to on the left ...

Very impressive. Reminds me of what one of the guides said at Uluru (Ayer's Rock) in central Australia. They have several million visitors a year, most climb the rock (there's a chain to help you up) and someone dies every year on the climb. Apparantly it's usually people making a grab for their hat when it blows off, or something similarly daft. And the guide said, by the time they reach the ground they're usually dead because the surface on the way down is covered in razor sharp edges of rock.

Beautiful landscape. Well seen.
