This is the Nishiyama area, where Usuzan started to erupt in March 2000.
Since then the area has remained a sort of outdoor museum, where you can see
the aftereffects of the eruption.
As I understand it, the eruption at the site in the background pushed up the land,
creating a rim which holds the water in the foreground. There were no casualties,
as people had been evacuated early.
