My parents moved into the apartment pictured above in Siann Hall as newlyweds in the late 1950s. It was a 1 bedroom, 1F? They moved to a larger unit when family got bigger. I have very vivid memories of that building even after all these years. The walls were painted a coffee color semigloss, and the trim/railings were a dark brown. Ceiling fixtures were round with multiple exposed bulbs. There was a marble mantle/fireplace (decorative only) along one wall, and 4 heavy, carved benches. 2 on each wall. There were three stairways off the main hallway. Two were set off the main lobby, right side front and back. each had 3 large arched openings onto the main hallway. the center opening had 2 marble steps up to a pretty big mailbox/stairway area, which also had doors to 3 apartments. The other two openings had heavy painted balustrades--which we sat on or climbed over countless times. The stairway on the left side off the main hallway was just a simple stairway. The hallway windows, and the windows in the 2 recessed areas were entirely stained glass in a random pattern. We played in every square corner of that building from basement to roof, and in neighboring ones also. And the main entrance was 2 black wrought iron doors over clear glass, with a matching transom. Inside walk up 5/6 steps to inner locked doors.

I had friends that lived in this building. I remember it well. Sometimes we would have building "wars". Thank You for posting these.

Three stairways to apartments in the lobby, This one is toward the back of the lobby area. Walk up a few steps and in front (recessed in the wall) were the mail boxes and to the right steps going upstairs... This is a five story building, so no elevators. However, there were dump weighters to collect garbage each evening by the superintendent. The green color cast of this photo is due to the color temperature of the fluorescent fixture/tubes.
