Vikings men’s basketball winning streak pushed to 10 games with upset win over Durham

(Kingston, ON) It was a heated battle between the number one and number two teams of the OCAA East division on Wednesday night, when the Vikings hosted the first place Durham College Lords. The game reached the boiling point in the third quarter, but the Vikings adjusted with a short bench and hung on for a massive 88-70 upset victory, extending their winning streak to 10 games.

Early on, both teams were strictly focused on offense to start the game, as they combined for a 46-point quarter, with Durham holding onto a slim two-point lead. The Lords were up by five, but Andrew Dawkins hit a buzzer beater three-point shot to come within two.

In the second, the Vikings continued their hot shooting, capped with Jaz Bains retaking the lead with a clutch three-pointer. Andrew Dawkins was on fire in the second quarter with the three ball, as the Vikings consistently found him open and Dawkins would make no mistake, with 24 points just in the first half.

Having run the court for the entire first half, the fast pace was starting to wear down the Durham Lords as the Vikings consistently came back on defense, forced a turnover or grabbed a defensive rebound and were able to go the other way and score. Durham would switch to a full court press to try and slow down SLC, but the Vikings stuck to their game plan of quick ball movement that was clearly frustrating and tiring Durham.

As mentioned, things reached a boiling point when Durham would take a flagrant foul against Bains that caused players from both teams to come onto the floor. Once the dust had settled both SK Downey and Donald Gibson had been ejected for the Vikings, along with Ajahmo Clarke from Durham. With only one player left on the bench for the Vikings, coach Smith wasn't left with many options.

"Loosing two players drastically changed the game" said Vikings head coach, Barry Smith.

"With only five guys to go with, we had to switch to a zone defense and pray that we kept our hot shooting."

When play did resume, it seemed that SLC had gained all the momentum as the home crowd carried the team through the remaining minutes of the third quarter, with the Vikings still in the lead.

In the fourth, the Vikings continued to play hard team basketball, which carried them through the final quarter, leading to the 88-70 victory. Brad Richards took over under the net, grabbing 15 rebounds. Andrew Dawkins still had the hot hand, finishing with a ridiculous 38 points. Jaz Bains controlled the pace all game, finishing with 24 points. Thomas Aufleger and Taylor Reddick did a great job subbing in, combining for five points and six rebounds.

With an extra two points from their massive upset victory, the Vikings own second place in the OCAA East, two-points up on the Georgian College Grizzlies, and are undefeated in their last 10 games
