Coolpix 995

Here's the 995 camera, and I cannot say enough about it. This image was borrowed from another site.

At first I thought the swiveling of the lens portion would be clunky. Oh, how wrong I was! It comes in very handy when doing telephotos with an auxiliary lens. One doesn't have to crane one's neck to get good position and the same goes for microscopes, or just plain macro work. The screen is always in near perfect position. This camera is excellent for photographing technical items. It does have a full automatic mode which handles normal pics very well. The threaded lens handles filters and various attachments, such as a slide copier. I like the manual pop-up flash too. This way if you ABSOLUTELY do not want a flash (i.e. concerts, church setting, or surveillance work), just leave it in the down position and rest assured that it won't work. You'll want to put a piece of thick rubber-type black tape over the "shot confirmation light" which is shown in the pic above. Long story here and not germane to pellet pics. Maximum ASA is 800. It has a ¼ x 20 tpi female metal thread for mounting on a tripod. Some cameras have it in plastic - not good at all.

This style of camera has built up a vast following, and the aftermarket has put forth loads of accessories.

The shutter speed allows a 1 minute maximum "bulb" setting. This allows the shutter to be held open for one minute while the flash can do its brief work, and is very important for work such as this. The camera offers full manual control, and this includes focus distance. There was a rather steep learning curve for me, …..but it was worth it. There is a great Nikon forum which helped me 'get going', and it took me a week or so of study before I felt comfortable with it. Now it is a piece of cake. I rarely use anything except the manual mode for technical shots. If I do, it is to the shutter priority mode, as this is the only other mode that makes any sense to me.
