I'm Here! This is a very early shot of yours truly. It could very well be the 1st shot ever taken of me, I simply do not know. It was taken 27 December 1961 |
Choppers?Yes, Richard was born with two lower front teeth, as was his son, Isaac, some forty six years later. Genes are a marvel huh? |
December 1961This was taken in the trailer my parents lived in, when I was born. Again, this is one of the first pictures I have, taken of me. |
Meine OpaThis is a picture of me with my grampa, Stuart. We were visitng them at their new duty station in Topeka Kansas. My grampa was a Chief Master Sergeant with the United States Air Force. |
Meine VatiThis is a shot of me with my father. |
Jung PortschyThis was the second oldest picture I have of myself. It was taken in the trailer park where my folks lived when I was born. |
One YearThis was me with my parents at a year old. My daughter Hazelmarie has very similar features & mannerisms. Genetics are fascinating. |
 Ricky MannOne Year Old. |
![Yes, I was Ricky. No, I did not have a choice. Yes, I hated it. Eldest of two children born to, Richard Lee Mann & his wife, Sarajane [Coatney] Mann.](https://a4.pbase.com/g1/18/793118/3/96989171.wOTj5zHf.jpg) Ricky Mann, 18 MonthsYes, I was Ricky. No, I did not have a choice. Yes, I hated it. Eldest of two children born to, Richard Lee Mann & his wife, Sarajane [Coatney] Mann. |
Three Years OldWell, almost. I turned three, three months later. I do not remember this picture being taken, but I remember vividly that bloody air conditioner. No one was allowed to touch it accept my parents. Naturally, I took it as my duty to then mess with it as often as possible. Did I mention I got spanked a lot? It was very loud so whenever I fooled with it, everyone knew. |
Mitzi u PunkyThis was me with our dog, Mitzi. The dog in the background belonged to my father's friend Duane. Her name was Punky & she got hit by a car later on, losing an eye. It's funny, the things you remember. |
A Boy & His BunnyI remember this bunny. I had to sleep with it every night & it absolutely HAD to be covered up with me. It could not lay on top of the covers, lest he get cold. |
04 Years OldI'm not quite sure whose idea it was to have me looking like Ghandi, but for two solid years I did. I do however, remember that orange sweater. It was made for me by my grandmother, so I was ordered to wear it. Actually, if I remember correctly, I loved the thing. |
Ricky & Joe JoeBefore I became allergic to cats |
My New SlingshotI got in a lot of trouble for having this. Perhps it was because I kept shooting the family cat, but I'm really not sure. |
05 Years OldAgain, Ghandi. This picture blows and I'll tell you why. It had been folded in half for years. I'm pretty good with Adobe Photoshop, but even Adobe can't fix everything. It was either leave the cracks in, or post what I had. |
The Mann BoysMy brother David and me. This was right before we moved to a new house. |
Brothers MannFiguring out a way to weasel my brother out of his poptart. |
My Brother & MeMy infant brother David and I. Now, he's finishing up a twenty year career in the military & the father of two children of his own. |
Mitzi & MeOur dog, Mitzi. She slept with me all the time. I still have that awful orange blanket, some forty years later. I cover up with it when I'm feeling ill. |
Captain AhabI remember this trip. My father paid this fool to take us around the lake in his boat. Look at these two pictures & you tell me if this boat looks sea worthy to you? It's made of plyboard for crying out loud. |
Can I Swim?Is that really what he just asked me? Look at this flimsy old boat. |
I'm Not In The MoodI just got my tail chewed out ... again. Probably for picking on my brother. |
Okay, Take ItI hated this turtle. We went to Marineland, why I do not know. My father DEMANDED that I get atop this nasty, disease ridden turtle so that he could take my picture. Just look at the face of this child. Does it look as if he's having a good time? |
Not My DayAgain, I didn't want my picture taken here either. My father told me to stand under this silly prop. I knew better. At six years old, I knew better. This day blew. |
Let's GoIf I smile, can we leave this place & go back to grandma's? |
![Here we see my great paternal grandfather, Charles LeRoy (Roy) Merrill, his daughter, Hazel Alice [Merrill], Mann, Riley, her son, Richard Lee Mann (on the end) & his son, yours truly, Richard Merrill Coatney Portschy Mann. This was right before sending my father back home to Kansas City. I stayed the summer in California with my grandma.](https://a4.pbase.com/g1/18/793118/3/97287823.Cz0WYdjv.jpg) Four GenerationsHere we see my great paternal grandfather, Charles LeRoy (Roy) Merrill, his daughter, Hazel Alice [Merrill], Mann, Riley, her son, Richard Lee Mann (on the end) & his son, yours truly, Richard Merrill Coatney Portschy Mann. This was right before sending my father back home to Kansas City. I stayed the summer in California with my grandma. |
I'll HelpI loved my grandma & wanted to stay, but it was always hard for me to separate from my father. I refused to let him get more than a few feet away from me, until he took off without me. I adored him. |
Yeah, I'm CoolNothing's changed, except that now, my wife & my children are cooler than me. |
Out To SeaI was scared to death when this shot was taken. The tide would rush out, and with it a given amount of sand. I stood there, crying like a ten year old Brownee, worried I might be carried out to sea. My grandmother ordered me to stand still so she could take this picture. |
1st GradeMrs. Simpson's class at Chapel Hill Elementary School, in Gladstone. I remember it well. Nice little sweater there, Beaver Cleaver. Look how cruel my parents were to me. I was seven years old here. |
2nd GradeI must have had all kinds of these goofy sweaters. I think it was because my grandmother kept making them for me. This was my 2nd grade photograph, taken while I was attending Chapel Hill Elementary School in Gladstone. I was in Mrs. Metzgar's class & was eight years old when this shot was taken. |
Chapel Hill ElementaryThis is the oldest school shot I have. It was taken in the spring of 1970. Funny, I remember about 75% of the kids shown. Sadly enough, some are dead now. I'm the kid front row, left. I'll never forgive my mother for the way she dressed me. |
3rd GradePaging Poncho Via. Again, one of Oma's finest. My German / Austrian grandmother, knitting me a Mexican poncho, now THAT'S American. This was taken at Chapel Hill Elementary School during my 3rd grade year. I was in Mrs. Hagen's class & was nine years old when this picture was taken. I don't remember this picture being taken, but remember very well, every one taken afterwards. |
Linden West ElementaryThis was my 3rd grade picture. Notice the plaid jacket with the practically knee high pants. I think my mother just laughed and laughed thinking about these pictures. |
The Mann FamilyRichard Lee, Sarajane, David J., & Richard. Six months after this family portrait was taken, my father died. It was an incident that forever changed my life, & how I looked at life... and death. |
4th GradeShown above is a broken child. My father had died just ninety days prior to this picture being shot & every bit of it shows. I was in Mrs. Frye's class at Linden West Elementary School, in Kansas City. I was ten years old. |
Linden West ElementaryThis was my fourth grade picture. I'm convinced my mother did this nonsense on purpose. Who dresses their child in a green shirt, with brown pants, blue socks & brown shoes? |
5th GradeThis was our class photo taken at Linden West Elementary School, in Kansas City. I was in Mrs. Hawblitzel's class. I hated that blue shirt. I got in constant trouble from teachers & my mother because I usually chewed on the metal ring that zipped it up & down. Underneath my dress shirt I was proudly wearing one of my Wentworth Military School T-shirts. I was attending Wentworth during the summers. I was eleven years old in this photograph. |
6th GradeMr. Cool. This picture was an awful color. I played with it for an hour to get it to come out looking "this" good. Thirty five years is hard on a small picture. This was taken while I was in Mrs. Cameron's 6th grade class at Linden West Elementary School, in Kansas City. I was twelve years old when this photograph was taken. |
The Monkey HouseThis was an awful shot, but interesting. It shows me, my brother David, & the cage where our grandmother kept her pet monkeys. Yes, the woman had pet monkeys. The really funny part of that, is that I didn't realize how strange that was until I was nearly twenty years old. |
The Season of LoveWe were always a close knit family, as you can see. I'm obviously engaged with my grandparents and they're just as engaged with each other. No wonder I'm the way I am. |
Wentworth Military Academy 1976The ever proud Cadet.
|
Wentworth Military AcademyFoxtrot Company. What a bunch. |
WMA Track Team 1976Once upon a time. |
Nice Hair FonzyI attended a military school. Here, at the end of the summer, I was displaying my newly grown locks. They soon came right off. Looking back on this picture, a question comes to mind. What kind of parent allows her fifteen year old son to wear a shirt advertising beer? |
Summer @ Big BearMy poor grandmother; she loved me so. I was fifteen years old and ALL ATTITUDE. She was the sweetest thing. All she wanted was a picture with me. I was very concerned about my hair, but not apparently about keeping my eyes open when the shutter opened & closed again on the camera. I miss her still. |
Richard & TamThis was a photograph taken of me and one of my paternal cousins. She's a sweetie, a wife and a mother herself, these days. |
Summer 1978Man I remember this shot. This was many life times ago. I was visitng my grandparents who themselves were visitng from California. I miss them all. Hard to believe that when this shot was taken, my wife wasn't even born yet. |
Mr. HappyThis, believe it or not, was one of my old passport photographs. The shirt was green & my attitude was black. I couldn't wait to get out of the house. |
Lincoln 1979Here I was visiting with my aunt Dorothy in Lincoln in 1979. I think my cousin Tammy took this picture. |
Mr. Long HairBefore it fell out, is usually looked as if it needed cut. This was a shot from my junior year at, Oak Park High School, 1979. |
Senior PromI had a blast. This is me with my date, Linda Carnes. My parents didn't even realize it was prom I don't think. I had to take my date over to my friend's house to have our pictures taken. |
Master ElectricianThis was taken many, many beers ago. I was eighteen & living in Burbank California. Here I was shirtless & hairless, working on some masterpiece, no doubt. |
Universal Studios CartoonThis was one of those drawing kiosks at Universal. I was living in Burbank at the time with my grandparents. I was bored one day and decided to take the tour, as it was only blocks from my house. I cannot believe that at one time, I actually had this much hair. |
1980My poor brother has been blocked out. He was detracting from the awesome handsomeness that is, well, me. |
I Loved CollegeThis was a shot taken on the steps of the Phi Delta Theta house, at Washburn University, Topeka Kansas. Everyone in this picture is now fifty pounds heavier, has less hair, ( some of us, MUCH less) & a lot less carefree. What a time. I wouldn't go back, but it sure was fun. |
Sad ReunionThis was taken at our friend, Bill's funeral. Most of us had not seen one another for almost thirty years. Shown, left to right is, David "Heff" Branstetter, Terry Bonnett, Richard "Cavemann" Mann, Greg "Weasel" Kinney, John Davis, and, Jay Fohey. People came from as far away as, Texas, Oklhahoma, and Indiana to bid a final farewell to an old friend. |
Harris HouseThis was several lifetimes ago for me. My friend was a bouncer at this club & I used to get in free & get a couple of free drinks. |
Basic TrainingThis was taken while I was in Basic Training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio Texas. |
Old FriendsThis was taken while I was living in Topeka Kansas, 1984. Shown left to right are: Richard "Rick" Egid Boeh II, Richard "Rick" Mann II, and Steve "Rocky-Boo Boo" Rothrock. My friend Rick Boeh died in 1996. |
Texas BoundThis was taken while some friends helped me move to Arlington Texas in 1984. Shown left is my friend, Randall, yours truly & Keith. |
MoronHEY, TAKE THE HELMET OFF. I've no idea why I didn't. Could have been that Budweiser may have played a small part in the decision making process. |
Co-WorkersThese were a few of the folks I worked with while living in Topeka Kansas. |
Oak Park HS 05 YrsHere I am at my five year, high school reunion. I'm the soak on his knees in the front row, drinking two fisted. I thought it was funny when I did it, but now I can see just how sad it was. It took me a very long time to realize what trouble I was in. |
Rick & RickMany lifetimes ago, I was called Rick. Above is a shot of me with my friend Rick Boeh, taken while I was visiting him at his home in Las Vegas. He's since passed away. Man, he was a funny dude. |
Columbus NebraskaI was working for the Nebraska Department of Social Services, running a group home for troubled teens in Columbus. I was called in on Christmas night to quell some trouble & figured I'd get in some paper work before I went home. One of my charges came in and took this picture. That seems like a million lifetimes ago. |
Nebraska FatsShooting pool with my brother & his friend. It was my Godfather phase. |
I used to be THIS wildThe story to this shot is too long to tell. Suffice it to say, I used to be a very wild young man. Thanks to my wife and my children, I don't live like this any longer. I love you so much Salena. |
1990My brother was in this shot too, but blocked out again. This time I'd become mature. |
Oak Park HS ReunionAgain, here I am at the ten year reunion. There I am again, seemingly drinking again as the flash goes off. Here's the kicker. I wasn't drinking at the time. However, classmates kept trying to get me a drink, & the only way I could fend them off was to carry one around all night. Thus I carried the same warm cup of beer for nearly four hours, & didn't have so much as a sip. Alcoholism is extremely attractive kids. |
Ten Year ReunionThis was taken 10 years out of high school. The people on the stairs were the people who had attended Chapel Hill. Many of these folks on these stairs were in the 1970 shot of my class with Mrs. Metzgar. |
Mut & JeffMy friend Dan & me keeping the bad guys at bay. |
1972 124 SpiderThis was taken next to my beloved Fiat, on the shores of the Isle of Palms, Charleston, South Carolina. |
Humpty Dumpty Was PushedThat's what my shirt read anyway. This is the reason I buy foreign made cars today. This Fiero was the biggest piece of shit. It was the last of six or seven American made automobiles I had, before I got smart. |
Brother's in BrewThis picture made our mother so bloody angry, that it was worth every nickel we spent to have it taken. I carried this shot in my wallet for years, which is why this scan looks so very clean & nice. |
On The LakeEnjoying the lake. |
Aunt Ruth & Uncle CarlI was visitng with my aunt Ruth Heinz, sister to my grandfather, Robert Mann. |
Trouble On The BorderHusker Nation Begins Here! |
Essen mit TrinkenHere I'm stopping off at a local shop just off the Autobahn, for some soda & chips. The Deutsche Autobahn has fewer fatalities per year, per capita than the US highway system. Speed limits have nothing to do with safety. They have everything to do with revenue generation. |
German CastleThis is a shot of me, walking around a castle that stands atop a hill over looking the village of Rammstein, Deutschland. Rammstein is also the location for the largest Air Force Base in Europe. |
Idar ObersteinShopping in Idar Oberstein, Deutschland. The town is built right up against a mountain. |

A Mann & His DogShown above is my favorites dog and best friend in the world. I loved that little dog. My grandmother gave him to me at just over six weeks old and I had him for a decade. We shared a birthday, Sarge and I. Here we are on one of my bikes, in July of 1994. |
Storming ParisContinuing the tradition of, "The Ugly American", I climbed the Eiffel tower & promptly spit off the top. Ich Hasse alles der Frankreisch Luete. Alles es ist unter-mensch. DEUTSCHLAND UBER ALLES! |

Mondsee AustriaHerr Mann travels back to the land from whence his own came. This was taken in Mondsee Austria, just a few miles from where my great great grandparents came in 1875. |
Der Zeplin Felt"The Zeplin Field". This is the podium where Adolf Schikelgruber, aka Hitler, gave his Nuremburg speeches. |
Husker FootballHere I am, hitching a ride in Rajka Hungary. Can you believe it, nobody there had even ever heard of Husker Football. I couldn't stay. |
Czech RepublicThis is a shot of me standing at the sign welcoming you to the Czech Republic, formerly known as, Czechoslovakia. I hate that place. I got arrested in Prague for a very minor offense & discovered first hand just how well they've grasped the idea of capitalism. |

Frau AllacherShown above is my cousin, Frau Allacher. She was decorating graves at the local Freidhoff. |
Richard & FontThis is a shot of me, standing next to the Baptismal font located in the Kirche in Gols. This font was used to Baptize my 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th great maternal grandparents. Standing there, amongst the ghosts of my own, was nothing short of awesome. |
Am GolsStanding by the sign welcoming folks to town. In May of 1875, my own 2nd great grandparents left this town for Lancaster County Nebraska, never looking back. I feel fortunate that I've been able to return so many times. |
Gols SunsetStanding beside the vinyards in Gols. Alles meine familie in Gols es ist Wein Bau. |
Ruhet Soldat"Rest Soldier". This was taken by an unmarked German grave in Rajka, Hungary. The cross reads, "Deutsche Soldat". |
Arbeit Macht FreiMade famous by the Deustche SS (Schutzstaffel, or "Protective Squad") It simply means, "freedom through work". This phrase was on many front gates of concentration camps. This one is guarding the entrance to, Dachau. |
Sigmund FruedHere I am standing by the sign in Sigmund Frued Park, in Wien Osterreich, or Vienna Austria. It's full of bums & winos. |

Morning ContemplationThe morning I left for San Diego. |
Hermosa BeachThis is a shot of me with some friends in California. I actually taught school with this woman in Kansas City. She was on holiday in Los Angeles seeing family & I was spending the summer in San Diego. I drove up and spent the afternoon with her & her children. |

Mr. Mann ReturnsFirst day back after spending the summer in San Diego. |
The Liquor MallYep, that was me, several hundred lifetimes ago, shopping for some favorite imports at a store called, "The Liquor Mall". It was in Atlanta Georgia and I was there, of all reasons, for an educators conference. Then again, one could make the arguement that it required a firm buzz just to attend one of those massive torture sessions. Personally, I'd rather go to an insurance seminar in Des Moines. |
 John DeerePushing Hay Bales |
Vegetarians Are SillyFlesh ... give me more flesh! This deer was taken as I was sleeping. I'm not kidding. Crashed on a hillside after a hard night with Jim Beam, 0430 comes mighty early. By 0800 I was sawing logs of my own, resting against the hill. I was awakened by the rustling of leaves as this deer ran from the creekbed through the valley floor and towards me. I awoke, drew down and took the shot in about 05 seconds or less, as the rustling leaves woke me up. How cool is that? I kill deer in my sleep. I'm not saying that pounding down the bourbon the night before is the way to go, but at least in this case, you can see what it yielded. |
Snake Won't DieCould I hold it any farther from my body? I hate snakes. HATE. Like a little girl, I squeal when I'm near one. This one I shot after we found it under the sink in the farm house. I mustered the courage for this pose, then quickly dropped it on the ground & rushed inside, where it was safe. Some thirty minutes later we came out again & it had gone, the last bit of tail slithering in a nearby hole. It had still been ALIVE when I was holding it. Never again. Next time I chop the head off! |

Lake MichiganI love this shot. My wife took it of me looking out at Lake Michigan, from the coast line of the Upper Peninsula. |
Holy IPU BatmanMy sister visited us this spring. She asked me if I'd take her here, so I did. What makes this so bloody funny is that I'm the most militant Athiest you'll ever meet. The IHOP? Give me a break. They may as well have had folks standing in the parking lot waving their collection plate around. That's all this nonsense is. |
 Toni n Me |
Mich u Meine Engel"Me & my angel" This was taken the very first night after my daughter, Hazelmarie was born. Never have I been so happy. I love that little girl like nothing else I can compare. Mama was getting some well deserved rest & the two of us were catching some ZZZs. |
 Hazelmarie u VatiHalloween 2007 |
Merry Festivas, 2007 CEThis was an interesting picture. Our little studio is fairly narrow, making horizontal takes difficult. We had to squeeze in the three of us without having it look as cramped as it was. After all our efforts I discovered, my tie was askew. I was forced to go into Adobe & completely erase my tie & the shirt. Then I had to "make" one & add it. I also had to add to the green tablecloth with copy & paste, as the original was very skinny. I don't think you can tell, not even when blown up to 8x10. We absolutely couldn't get Hazelmarie to look forward. She refused. So I lugged up a tv from downstairs & she ended up staring at the Kentucky / Tennessee football game while we struggled with the remote shutter button. The clicker is in my left hand. Can't see it can you? |
Familie MANNOur annual picture came wet this year. Mama found a wonderful place for us to have our picture done and it ended up raining on us. Rather than drive all the way home, we toughed it out and took the shots anyway. |
I love YouVati with his kleine engel. That little girl is the source of 55% of every smile I crack. Her mama is usually the source for the other 45%.
|
Meine VatiHazelmarie hangs out with her Vati, sort of her version of singing in the rain. For her fifteenth month shots, we did a few things differently. |
That's MY VatiHazelmarie hollering orders at her Mama. |
Meine Engel"My Angel". I hug that little girl much more than she prefers, but I simply can't help it. She is so much more than I ever dreamed of, and certainly more than I deserved. I can't think of one thing I've done in my entire life that warrants such a gift as her and her Mama. That makes it my debt, to now spend the rest of my days earning their unquestioned trust and their limitless love. |
GrrrThe kid loves to growl. As long as she's with Vati, Hazelmarie is quite brave. |

I Can Pet It!Vati's little girl so enjoys the petting zoo. Here she gets all excited about a goat that came close enough to the fence so that she could pet it. |
May I Have This Vati?Yes mam, you may. That is the best looking rock I've seen you find all day Sweetpea. |
"Was Ist Das Vati""What is that daddy"? We're mining for gold Princess. |
StylinVati gowns up for Isaac's coming out party. Oh man was I nervous. I HATE being in there. But, Mama likes me there, so I go, every time. I'll continue to go. Here I do my best to hide my fear. With each child I fear the loss of my wife, my friend, my partner and confidant. I never tell her these fears, but they're there nonetheless. I don't think I could bear it without that wonderful woman. |
Isaac mit vatiLook at how they bruised my boy's face. He looks like he just did ten rounds with Mike Tyson. |

Cut It OutWe've always put the "fun" in Dys"fun"ctional. This shot was not my idea. I decidely did not wish to participate, but now that it's done, I guess it came out alright. Just before the shutter clicked off, Karen Sue put her nasty wet finger in my ear. That reaction is all too real. Notice Hazelmarie going nuts? That too, is what they call reality Christmas. Emily, sane as she is, chose not to be a part of this madness. |
Just Us FourOur parents married over thirty years ago. My mother came to the marriage with two teenaged boys & my dad with two teenaged girls. He died in January of 1995. Nearly fourteen years after his death, & thirty three years after their marriage, the four of us, "kids" remain siblings. We do not share genetics. However we continue to share love, respect, and a closeness blood siblings often lack. I am proud of all of them, and more proud still, to call myself one of them. Thanks for coming. I love you all. |
MANN X2This is a shot we've been taking for twenty years now. The truth is, I don't even drink anymore. I haven't for years, but for some reason I still find this pose funny. Maybe it's because it makes our mother so bloody angry. David Jonathan, and his elder brother, Richard. |

Mann MenThe girls caught Vati and Isaac sneaking a snuggle. We thought it was a nice shot. |

Das Kinden"The Children". Getting the brood ready for a stroll around the neighborhood. |
Familie MANNHappy 4th of July, 2009. Little Isaac was blinded by the sun, and Hazelmarie had her best half smile pasted on. Left to right we see Mama, Salena Marie, holding little Isaac. In the back we see Vati, Richard holding Hazelmarie. Mama made that blanket just for this picture, although, as usual, it will end up on the bed of Her Majesty, Hazelmarie. |

I Can Do ItHazelmarie takes the hose from Vati and washes the grass from the driveway herself. |
Familie: MANNOur annual family photograph now includes our boy, Isaac. We took a shot in either August or September of 2007, right after we had Hazelmarie. We took another family photo last September, just before Isaac came, and so now, a family photo in late August or early September has become tradition. |
Happy HalloweenVom der Familie: MANN. Vati's beard looks like a prirate because he's growing it out for deer hunting. That Northwest Missouri wind bites mighty hard, and any amount of insulation is welcome. Hazelmarie had a blast for this shot but Isaac wasn't too sure. |
The Mann ClanHere they are, the best family any Mama could have. |
Munising, MichiganOn the tail end of our Michigan holiday, we took a few minutes to shoot a Family picture on the dock, in Munising. It's really, so pretty up there. The weather is brutal, but it boasts awesome scenery. |
4th of JulyWearing our best Patriotic shirtwear, the Mann Clan pose for their 2010 4th of July Family picture. Isaac was pretty uneasy about having his head shaved. So, Vati shaved his head too, in order to make him feel better. Thing is, Isaac's hair will grow back. |
Stay @ Home DadMama brought this home for me. It pretty much describes my life with my family. Being a stay at home dad is such a reward, but having the support of our Mama, is really something special. |
Happy OktoberOur last few days of 70 degree temperatures for the year, had us out working the Nikon. |
The MANN ClanWhen we left the house for a family photo shoot, it was sunny and warm. By the time we set up, it was raining and cold. Welcome to Missouri. |
