The Peacock

Mamallapuram

A young man finishing a peacock statue in black granite stone in one of the handicraft workshops of the Five Rathas area, while in the back a Buddha gets a facelift.

Where is the time that you could get a shelter by a family living in the Five Rathas area to get awakened with the rhythmic music of the hammering on granite stone.
Nowadays this early music deteriorated to the noise of penetrating sneering polishing discs and chiseling machines. Many workshops had even to move out of their area to make place for the renewed facilities by the government to welcome the tourists at the premises of the Five Rathas.

Most probably this young man went to the architect school a little outside Mamallapuram town where they learn the traditional art of stone-carving. A woman's brest f.i. must have the form of half a coconut to be confirm with the cultural art traditions. A lot of rules are described in the Veda's, so many statues resembles each other among the few who try to look forward to more modernistic approaches.
