Expedition Dinghy

I built an 11 foot stitch-and-glue plywood dinghy for Rosita. The dinghy is designed to nest (one half within the other) to reduce stowage space requirements. This allows a larger dinghy than would normally be possible. It includes storage/flotation compartments. It can be rowed, sailed, and powered with an outboard motor. Besides basic transportation , it will be used for expeditions (motor), recreation (sail), and exercise (row).

I'm glad they worked out well for you v.joe. I've found it easiest to put the two halves in the water, sit in the stern section and pull the bow section into place. Thanks for your comment.

I received this note from a fellow in Switzerland! Dear Garry, In 2005, I found your sites describing your progress with a Spindrift 11N. Here in Switzerland, where we do have no blue water, but lakes with a very crowded (and expensive) waterfront. I was taken with the design, because I would need no trailer and could assemble the two parts in shallow water or on the beach. Your modifications are taking the small boat into the small daysailer category: watertight storage, more buoyancy… much more useful than the Laser I had more than a decade ago. It was definitely your page (and my dreams) that made me buy the plans from Graham. I am taping the seams now. Looking on the breasthook, I realize how close my version is to yours. Thank you for sharing your ideas with me! There are lots of thoughts in your pages which I like very much. Your drawings and photos are excellent and they contain any information to build the modifications in the same way. I realized you do have plans to build a boat with some accommodation now, and I wish you good success with it. I’m sure it will turn into an innovative thing, and I hope you find time to enjoy sailing with it. I realised that it was a very good decision to start building that boat. It made me remember my dreams about travelling on sea when I was nineteen, which is something you did and I’m sure you will do in the future. Definitely, you are closer to retirement, and you will start much earlier… however, maybe we will find ourselves in a bay one day, enjoying the light on the water and complaining that the Spindrift 11N is slightly too large to fit properly on the foredeck of a 35-footer. I have a picture of the nesting 9 foot dink from BandByachtdesigns stored on the foredeck of my 26 foot yacht. There was an access problem with anchoring and adding the inner forestay, so may build a smaller one in future. If you need the photo, write me.

looks like this dink is gonna be in the final selection for me. Just one question remains: How much vertical space is needed between foredeck and boom to safely chuck her?
