tree of light -- catman

Dandridge Tennesse

I ran outside near sunset to shoot these trees. I have seen them before but never quite lit like this. I admit, there is some editorial adjustment applied them.

Your title says it all; the capture is luminous. Fantastic.

fascinating light, no matter how tweaked. it really makes an ordinary scene extraordinary.

The highlighted foliage enhances the dark branch patterns on this photo. It may seem a bit harsh but toning it down would take away from the contrast against the branches. Maybe cropping it down to just that one tree would aid to focus on a subject. Just MHO.

Thanks Shirley, your thinking is good on the topography but off on the far shore. I stood on a neighbor’s deck over looking the Lake. The lake due to drought conditions is well below the summer water level, exposing the old mountain side rock and stone and the foundations of buildings that were flooded when the dam was filled. I think geologist would call the rock, shell.

I really like this Richard. Of course the trees catching the late day sun are great but I'm so intriqued with the shore beyond the water. It looks like an industrial area miles away down a mountain. Like you were shooting this atop a big hill or mountain side. If I'm way off then that's okay... I like what I see :o)

I like the light and comp. Maybe a bit too harsh in contrast ? Great pic nonetheless.

I feel to be seated in this hill contemplating the evening landscape. Very relaxing shoot. endika

Just like Kevin did, I see a lot of details. I think this is positive. Details are here and they aren't distracting. In contrary they adds to the picture which I like a lot . Light and composition are beautiful.

Very very nice indeed, just the sort of lighting and texture b&w needs.

This is a great shot, although I may see a different shot to you? as there is loads of detail in the lower third, infact there is loads of detail everywhere.

This image was developed on a new monitor that has not been calibrated; I am curious to know how it looks on your monitor. I see very little detail if any in the diagonal shadow line below the trees, that runs from the lower right to the lower left. The tree trunk on the right is essentially black. the tree trunk on the left has some detail in the bark. I love the the way the images look on this monitor and I am afraid to mess with it.

Brent, no my PP skills are of a very basic nature. Knowing that, I shot this image in the camera using a BW red filter. The fore ground was almost black so I brought it out using the dodge tool. I increased the contrast using levels and that is about it. I shot it in the raw mode with sharp set to zero and applied sharp in PP.
I just found the description of the highlight brush, in Photoshop 7, you are right that is just what I need…
thanks

Do you use a hilite brush? I often find that I can get a good separation of the elements by experimenting with the individual color channels (CTRL & 1, 2, 3 or ~ for all) and either converting directly to gray scale or using the channel mixer to get the best tones. Really a cool picture - perhaps just a nudge to lift the foreground elements (not a lot). cool shot! brent
