You've certainly caught this just right. These kind of shots always amaze me - my bird shots never come out as I would like them...

Isn't is something how these creatures work so very hard just to stay in one place? There's a good allegory there someplace. This shot is wonderful the reasons others mentioned and also that the background bokeh so perfectly matches the hummer's color. endika is right - you have a real nice arrangement with these birds. --Stefan

I like that the picture intertwines with another part of your life that you love (actually two - gardening and hummers). Also that you are out and sharing your pictures with a wider audience (something I have not tried to do). The picture is excellent with the light coming through the wings and how his head/ body seem still while the rest of the world - even the flowers seem to be in motion.

I like this specially the effect on the wings, very dynamic. Actually, you look like you have some kind of agreement with hummingbirds!

Yes, you're right Shirley. I do use boiling water "just in case" and pour it over the sugar in a big glass measuring cup, then stir till dissolved. Forgot to include that part. Others probably boil the mixture itself, in a pot on the stove. But I drink from a well with pretty much zero chemical content. It was also tested at 0 for bacterial count. So I forgot about the various chemical additives that urban dwellers must contend with!

Glad you like this shot!! Thanks. It recently won its category and ended up with a 2nd-place overall best-in-show in our provincial garden club photo contest. My prize was a gift certificate to a mail-order garden supplier! : )

First, great beautiful hummingbird shot Brenda! Second, don't you have to boil the water first before making sugar water? So the chlorine and other chemicals we so freely drink every day won't hurt the birds? Just wondering.

The DOF really is good in theis shot and I love the touch of light on his head.

Brenda

Brad, if you aren't already using this, try just mixing plain sugar and water (1:4) and place the feeder in a fairly shady spot, as when it is really hot the solution can quickly turn into something the hummers don't want to drink. Mine don't like commercial hummingbird mix at all. But they love that good old sugar-water.

Glad you like this one!! Thanks. I've done many hummingbird shots but it was probably among the most difficult to capture with this particular light.

yes, I can see why you choose this,, I put up a humming bird feeder,,so far some bees and wasps like it,, I have not got a humming bird,, ,maybe the solution gets too hot?,, it has been in the 90' here
