The Young Upstart - Colin

Wiltshire, England

Old Sarum is an Iron Age hill fort constructed about 5,000 years ago
Occupied by the Romans, Saxons and then the Normans, the site was in use until a new Cathedral was built in the valley below in the 13th centaury.
It has the tallest spire in Britain, making it visible for miles around.

The modern town of Salisbury grew up around the new cathedral and Sarum was gradually abandoned.

A fine tree, and not a bad old building either : )

Agree with the said before: this photo works perfectly to show the druidic soul of the earth watching the "newcomers". endika

I like your point of view... looking at the 750 y/o construction as the 'young upstart' Kind of puts things in perspective.

I'd like to see that cathedral someday. It must be pretty impressive. And stonehenge isn't far away, either...Should make for a good trip.
I like your composition, with the venerable old tree framing the cathedral in the background.

Dennis, yes the tree is near the edge of the ramparts of the fort, which are just behind the yew tree. Still pretty impressive ditch too, at least 60 feet deep.
Had a thought about the title though, so I'm going to change it :-)

Lovely shot Colin. I like how you used the tree as the prominent feature but with cathedral still visible. I presume the tree is in the grounds of the old fort?
