Wilson's are the largest of the phalaropes with females weighing in at 2.1 oz almost twice the 1.2 oz Red-necked. Red Phalaropes run a close second to the Wilson's at a chunky 1.9oz.
In phalaropes the female is the larger and more brightly colored of the pair. She mates with multiple males and leaves them to hatch the eggs and comes back through very early in the summer. I've had breeding plumaged Wilson's females, celebrating on the Gulf Coast by the 4th of July.
