Black Duck - Mallard - hybrid

While scanning a flock of ducks resting in a rolled rice field I came across this individual. At this angle and lighting, you could easily pass it off as just another Black Duck. The first thing that stopped my scan was the color of the bill, too yellow for a pure Black and then the back was too pale and the breast had a reddish tint. Seeing a hybrid of this mix was a rarity when I first started birding some 20 odd years ago but it is an expected bird in any wintering flock at this time. The Britton Ford unit of the TN NWR in Henry Co, TN has the largest wintering numbers of Black Ducks in our area that I know of and each year we find a higher and higher percentage of these birds of mixed parentage.
