Adult plumage is aquired after 18 months. As you can see, by late summer and early fall these second year birds can be pretty rough looking as they start trading their worn feathers for adult plumage. At this time they have molted in most of the adult feathering on the breast and belly. Females begin this molt in June-July while males wait till July and August.
