In Memphis, TN at Ensley Bottoms, I found the first young Black-necked Stilts on July 4, 1982 at the waste water treatment lagoons. Since that time their numbers have grown, having as many as 60 nest a year. The year 2004, has been exceptional. These birds arrive in March and by late June or early July, we have lanky young already in bicolored plumage and some nests still under construction. The following photos are of one nest I have been following this year. The eggs started hatching on June 26, 2004.
