Photos taken on a railfan trip with Nick Pitsch to Empalme, Sonora, Mexico in October 1995. There is other photos that were taken with another camera, that will be scanned and added later.. The basic trip plan was to start over near Douglas, AZ, across the border to Aqua Prieta, then Naco. Over to Nogales, down to Benjamin Hill for the railroad shops there, and to Hermosillo. Hermosillo to Empalme for the railroad shops there, with the 2 remaining unrestored PA-1s there.
We came back impressed with the talents of the Mexican railroaders, in keeping their locomotives running, even with a lot of cannibalization of older locomotives. We were welcomed into the shops and offices warmly. All this is probably long gone, with the privatization of the FNM and other Mexican railroads. More photos to be added yet...
