The Column of Marcus Aurelius in Piazza Colonna
This column was erected between 180 and 196 after the death of Marcus Aurelius (161-80) - it was built in honour of his victories over the triumph over the Marcomans, the Quads and the Sarmatias ("barbarian" tribes of the Danube). In 1589 Pope Sixtus V had the statue of the Emperor on the top of the column replaced with one of S. Paul.
