Hidden behind the shrubs, the resort at Hot Wells.
The wells with hot water were first discovered by a crew drilling for oil in 1913. The waters were claimed to have healing powers and many people were attracted to the area. In 1917 a resort was opened on the area.
In 1938 Hot Wells resort came under the control of the state of Louisiana. A larger facility was built including a swimming pool, lodge and motel. I remember sometime in the 1950's visiting the place with my mother and friends.
Lack of publicity doomed Hot Wells resort and the lack of visitors spelled more money for funding from the state. IN 1986 it was closed. The Louisiana National Guard used the facility for a time but in 2007 the buildings were demolished.
