For many years the Chalmette National Battlefield - site of the Battle of New Orleans in 1814 was the only National Park Service site in Louisiana. Now even Lafayette has a unit of the NPS.

The Acadian Culture Center is located adjacent to Vermilionville. It should be visited in order for one to appreciate the Cajun culture.
