Cypress Island Nature Preserve is the official name of what is locally known as Lake Martin.
It is located a few miles east of Lafayette, a little off the beaten path to most, but a mecca for naturalists and bird watchers. Cypress Island is owned by the Nature Conservatory but unlike many of their locations, it is open to the public daily. (Check their website about hours of operation for the Visitor Center - which is a must for a first time visitor)
Cypress Island is a tupelo cypress swamp and home to many species of birds, and also of alligators. There is a boat launch and the fishing is excellent.
We really encourage you to visit Cypress Island, BUT please follow the rules. It is a natural area, do not disturb the wildlife and more importantly, take home what you have brought with you.
